Professional Communities for Interpreters

P

Being a member of many active professional communities has really helped me grow as an interpreter!

Not only are they excellent resources for learning terminology, discussing best practices, and exploring ethical dilemmas, they’re also fantastic opportunity for networking and learning about different job opportunities.

The KGH Interpretation Community Network

I not only manage quite a few Facebook groups for interpreters (and translators) but I also founded two much-needed groups as well. I dedicate my time to these groups because of the invaluable role they play as accessible free resources that offer interpreters much-needed support.

You can read more about each group by clicking their name in the section below!

Queer-Friendly Interpreters & Translators
U.S. Medical Interpreters

In March of 2020, a few days before COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic, an administrator of the group U.S. Medical Interpreters approached me and asked if I would like to be a moderator. I accepted and thus began my journey of managing Facebook groups for interpreters!

This group has changed quite a bit since I started. We now boast nearly 8,000 members from all over the world and the most common posts are regarding agency feedback, job postings, and resources for medical interpreters. As of August 2023, we have pinned posts at the top of the group with a poll/directory of interpreted languages in the group, as well as a list of job openings. Even though this group is titled “US Medical Interpreters” as far as I’m concerned, as long as you are providing services to US healthcare clients as an interpreter, you’re welcome here!

Did you know?

By the end of 2023 I will have spent hundreds of hours managing the Facebook communities above. While I don’t expect compensation for these hours of service, contributions are always appreciated, and enable me to dedicate more of my time to support interpreters!

Other Interpreting Facebook Groups

I am also a member of many professional groups for interpreters on Facebook. I haven’t listed all the groups I am a member of here, so think of this as a highlights reel! If there is an additional group you think I should be a member of, please reach out to me.

  • Foro para intérpretes (Member)
A group based out of Mexico (primarily in Spanish). The group’s leader is incredibly inclusive and this is a great resource for Spanish-language resources.
  • Interpreters and Translators in Washington State (Member)
Even though I live in Virginia, I was invited by this group’s founder to join because she really enjoyed my articles and wanted to have more educational resources for her group members.
  • Medical Translation and Interpreting Crew (Member)
I absolutely love how informative and engaged this group’s founder is!  This is my go-to group for Spanish-English questions and tons of useful, fact-based information.
